Narrative

A Montana family faces off against others who are encroaching on their land. Forry J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to his usual Southern California voice.

Kevin Costner is the patriarch who runs a dynastic ranch the size of several states. Their way of life is influenced by tourism entrepreneurs, tribal rights, and the authority of the state of Montana. Reminiscent of Rock Hudson in “Giant,” he tries to cling to the old ways.

Costner seems to naturally step into his character’s shoes

“Yellowstone” moves quickly with little introduction, but its story unravels with the natural rhythm of a day in the wilderness, pausing for tribal rituals, cowboy conventions, and political machinations. It’s a wide-ranging adventure that focuses on the seams between law and justice, family and friendships. He’s a world-weary man who’s seen too much and lied too often.

The land and family are his soul

He can hear footsteps approaching, but he can only play the part out of habit and loyalty. While some of the action is a little confusing due to the lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting an authentic glimpse into life in another world. I hope the resolution of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail.

Update 7/20/18: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a steady rhythm. We learn the fullness of each story, from the roots to the fruits. I’m raising my rating to a “9.” The new season of “Silo” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
