Narrative
The girl’s gift for retelling events from Hollywood movies transforms the fate of her family in rural Chile in the 1960s. Presents Odavde do vechnosti (1953). Screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, this film is both a tribute to the American Western and an exploration of the power of cinema and narrative to transform lives. In Spanish with subtitles, the characters are drawn from life, and it is a rather complicated life. Set in “the driest place in the world,” the community is not down on its luck. There is plenty of room for tender comedy and young love. The camera strays from the real violence, but not from the story, which candidly tells what happens behind the scenes in a town located in a deserted desert for a young girl who is at the center of the story. The film was shot in an abandoned mining town, which adds to its versatility.
