Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman, the wonderful story of Irena Gut and the triumph of the human spirit over a devastating tragedy, when she risked her life to save the Jewish generation from the atrocities of the Holocaust, is presented. Although this Canadian film received a much wider release in Canada than the typical Canadian film, for some reason its distributor, Elevation Pictures, decided not to allocate a significant marketing budget to the film. As a result, the film did poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters at the end of the third week of release. (about 2 minutes in) The opening credits announce that the events are taking place on the eastern border of Poland. This territory of Poland was captured by the Soviet Union. I fully admit that I’ve been bad at keeping up with new movies for the past few years, as my knowledge has mostly been anecdotal based on what appears on my streaming services. I hadn’t heard anything about this movie until I saw it on Showtime a couple of nights ago, and I knew pretty much the same thing about every party involved. I also rarely write reviews on IMDB, but in this case I was drawn in by an undeservedly mediocre overall rating, skewed by one review that I find ridiculous in every way. So, let’s move on to the film itself. As others have noted, the acting and production values may be uneven, but what a story! There’s more here than a bit of Schindler’s List, but it’s even more unusual, with a main character who has anything but a privileged position. Others retold the plot well; I won’t do that here, but as impressive as it is as a story, what’s even more impressive is the moral complexity and humanity of almost all the characters, even the Germans, and the director’s insight that, although they’re not the main bad guys here, the Soviets must to answer for almost as much as the Nazis for their actions at the time, which largely refutes the false name “The Good Fight” (as well as many other things completely unrelated to this film, such such as the internment of Japanese-Americans, our bombing of the civilian population in Germany and Japan, indifference to the plight of European Jews, etc., etc.). I’m often moved by a good movie, but I have to admit that I get a little more than just tears watching the subsequent stories of the real characters that unfold during the end credits (don’t miss it!). For me, it’s somewhere between 8 and 9, but it gets the benefit of the doubt for the greatness of history and the need to raise a collective score here. I note that, although this film is not Polish, it is there, which makes it a duet of the two best films of the last few years, which I saw together with “Forgotten Love”. Highly recommended.
