In this supernatural winter epic set in the 19th century, a drunken apple salesman must rise from zero to hero and become the greatest fur trapper in North America by slaying hundreds of beavers. The estimated budget of the film was around $150,000. Director Mike Cheslik estimated that the mascot costumes cost around $10,000 and the crew purchased all the costumes online. After Watson Beaver “passes out”, his whiskers fall off and land in the snow when he gets up. He uses it again in the next scene despite walking away from him without picking it up. This is a film I saw at the Goosebumps Film Festival. It’s not in the horror genre, but I wanted to write a review anyway. I have to make it clear that this is not usually a movie I like. Seeing her with the crowd as midnight approached was a fun experience though. Co-writer and star Ryland Brickson’s on-screen story also adds the antics of Cole Tews. I should also mention that this was the Ohio premiere. In this movie we have Jean Kayak (Tews) who has an orchid and makes strong apple cider. He is a drinker who likes to have fun. One day the beavers appear and destroy one of their large barrels containing their cider. This causes everything to collapse and now it’s winter. Jean has no luck getting food and is struggling to survive. Jean then turns to the fur trade. Watch how the bearded man earns a lot of money. So much so that the guy who runs the stand, Doug Mancheski, wants him to marry his furrier daughter, Olivia Graves. Jean has an uphill struggle to become a hunter and this leads him to come face to face with the beaver in the area. They created an epic dam that can hold much more inside. Having seen Tews’ previous film, Lake Michigan Monster, I was somewhat familiar with what was in store for me. This is along similar lines. There is CGI and background animation. These techniques are also used in character movements and just to liven it up in general. This has been going on for a long time and I’m overwhelmed there. It helps that we don’t have a lot of dialogue. This is sometimes presented as a silent film, we even have title cards. It also reminds me of cartoons where our characters didn’t speak. It sounds cheap, but what it does is a lot harder than it looks. Following this idea, they tell a narrative story without using much dialogue. The things we see are repeated. I will admit that by the time we were nearing the end I was exhausted and ready to go home. But I don’t want to downplay it, as it gets harder by the day as midnight approaches. But I have to say that this film is perfect for a cinema experience or to take people out for a drink and enjoy the time they spend watching. I can understand that there are people who hate her. I tell you this as someone who loves serious and dark films, this is a film that will cleanse your palate and if you let yourself go, you will have a great time. I didn’t even mention that all the animals are people in costumes. It makes it even better with the shenanigans we see. If you have the opportunity to see it in the places I mentioned, do not hesitate to see it. My rating: 6 out of 10.
